The Pacific island nation of Tuvalu (population 12,000) says it is going to build a digital replication of itself in the metaverse as a way to preserve its history, culture, and lands amidst the threats or rising sea levels and climate change.
Tuvalu’s Foreign Minister Simon Kofe spoke about the initiative on Tuesday in a video for the UN’s COP27 climate summit, saying ‘as our land disappears, we have no choice but to become the world’s first digital nation.’
According to Reuters, approximately 40% of Tuvalu’s capital district is already regularly underwater at high tides, and the entire country ‘is forecast to be underwater by the end of the century.’

A little bit of trivia for the Americans. After the clusterfk of Brexit, the Tories claimed we could recoup some of our losses via a new trade deal with Tuvalu which is a collection of 9 islands with a population of under 12,000 and part of the British Commonwealth. That didn't age well! On a serious note, good luck Tuvalu with this project and the evacuation.
