Mark Zuckerberg has launched a new research group inside Meta focused on advanced artificial intelligence (AI) development.
The team, called Meta Superintelligence Labs, includes several researchers who recently left OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind.
At the center of this new division is Alexandr Wang, formerly the CEO of Scale AI. He currently serves as the Chief AI Officer at Meta. He works alongside Nat Friedman, the former CEO of GitHub, who leads product development and applied AI research.

Zuckerberg introduced the team in a company announcement, according to a report by CNBC. He stated that faster progress in AI is bringing the idea of “superintelligence” closer to reality. He added, “I am fully committed to doing what it takes for Meta to lead the way”.
The hiring spree has caused frustration at OpenAI. Chief Research Officer Mark Chen compared the situation to a break-in. He said in an internal memo obtained by Wired:
I feel a visceral feeling right now, as if someone has broken into our home and stolen something.
OpenAI gave its staff a week off to help ease concerns and lower stress. The company is also adjusting compensation and discussing new ways to retain workers, according to Chen.
