Keir Starmer, UK Prime Minister, announced his goal to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) across the country, supported by private investments and a detailed 50-point AI action plan.
This plan is based on recommendations from a report submitted by Matt Clifford in July 2024, chair of the Advanced Research and Invention Agency (ARIA).
According to a January 13 statement, the UK government has committed to implementing all of these proposals, including the creation of AI Growth Zones to fast-track planning permissions for data centers.

Additionally, the plan also highlights the development of a high-performance supercomputer capable of executing vast calculations at incredible speeds. A National Data Library will also be set up, which provides publicly accessible datasets to help train AI models.
Private companies are already showing support for the government’s initiative. Vantage Data Centres, Nscale, and Kyndryl have committed a total of $17 billion (14 billion British pounds) to help build the infrastructure needed for AI development.
Furthermore, the UK government plans to establish an AI Energy Council. This body will work closely with energy providers to ensure sustainable power for AI systems.
A new department within the existing Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology (DSIT) will also oversee AI initiatives and ensure the strategy is implemented effectively.
Prime Minister Starmer has instructed all cabinet members to prioritize AI in their respective areas. He believes this approach will bring advancements to the country, emphasizing that the government’s active involvement is essential for success.
