Universal Pictures has started including warnings in its movie credits that ban the use of its content for artificial intelligence (AI) training.
The notice, which has appeared in new releases like Jurassic World Rebirth and How to Train Your Dragon, tells AI developers that the material “may not be used to train AI”.
At the same time, AI company Midjourney is defending itself in court against a lawsuit filed by major studios, including Disney and Universal. The case claimed that Midjourney helped users create unapproved images that closely resemble characters from films such as Star Wars and The Avengers.

Midjourney filed a 43-page statement pushing back against the claims. The company argued that copyright law does not give creators complete control over how their work is used.
It pointed to the principle of “fair use”, which allows some types of reuse, especially when it supports free access to ideas or transforms the original work in a meaningful way.
Midjourney also brought up an apparent contradiction in the studios’ behavior. According to its court filing, many people using the platform have email addresses from Disney and Universal.
In addition, Midjourney argued that the studios failed to properly report which specific images or links were a problem. Under US copyright law, companies usually must provide exact examples when making a takedown request.
