Meta is trying to hire employees from OpenAI by offering large signing bonuses, close to $100 million, along with high-paying annual salaries.
This was shared by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman during an episode of the “Uncapped” podcast, hosted by his brother, Jack Altman, on June 17.
Altman said Meta had been approaching many members of OpenAI’s team with these offers. So far, however, none of the company’s core staff have accepted them.

Reports suggest that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is personally involved in the recruitment process. According to a report from Bloomberg, he has been holding private meetings with researchers at his homes in Palo Alto and Lake Tahoe.
Additionally, a 2024 report by The Information revealed that Zuckerberg had been sending emails and job offers to top names in the field.
The interest in AI workers has grown, with data from the venture firm SignalFire showing that keeping top talent is getting harder. Over the past two years, Anthropic has retained about 80% of its staff, DeepMind 78%, and OpenAI 67%.
Still, Meta is investing a large amount of money into attracting experts. Deedy Das from Menlo Ventures pointed out in a post on X that the company already spends around $2 million each year per AI employee, but even that has not stopped some from leaving for OpenAI or Anthropic.
