OpenAI has added image-making abilities into ChatGPT, where users can create pictures inside the same chat where they ask questions or have conversations, without switching tools.
The image feature comes from GPT-4o, the latest version of OpenAI’s technology. It replaces DALL-E 3, which launched in September 2023.
According to OpenAI, this new AI model can understand written instructions more clearly, draw accurate text inside images, and take inspiration from pictures uploaded by the user. The system can also mix different types of information—like chat history and image input—to make more useful and detailed results.

In a video demonstration, CEO Sam Altman showcased GPT-4o’s new features. The demo included examples like a comic-style explanation of science in two languages, custom trading cards based on real photos, and a coin design made from several images with a clear background.
One image was created from a very long and detailed prompt, and the result was shown to match the request.
The model is slower than previous versions when creating images. Instead of appearing all at once, the picture loads gradually, starting from the top. Despite the delay, OpenAI believes the extra time is worth it due to the better results.
The GPT-4o image generation feature can now be accessed by all Plus, Pro, and Team users, according to OpenAI’s post on X.
