A recent cryptocurrency scam has highlighted a need for fraud awareness. The new scam – called “pig butchering” – includes a sophisticated new twist that combines a romance scam with an investment spin.
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), “pig butchering” refers to a time-tested, heavily scripted, and contact-intensive process to fatten the prey before slaughter.
Scammers use social media and dating websites to build relationships with their victims, gaining their trust over time. Once they have built up enough rapport, they begin to make increasingly lavish promises of investment returns. In some cases, the victims are even promised shares in the company or access to exclusive deals. Unfortunately, these promises are all false, and the victims lose their hard-earned money.
The FBI advises people to be wary of any online offers that seem too good to be true and to never invest money with someone they don’t know and trust.
