Colombia has become one of the earliest countries to test legal proceedings in virtual reality with its recent legal trial in the metaverse. The two-hour hearing held by Colombia’s Magdalena Administrative court saw participants in a traffic dispute appear as avatars in a virtual courtroom.
The magistrate described the experience as amazing, and many participants noted that it felt more real than a video call. With the ability to make digital spaces feel more lifelike, the metaverse could revolutionize legal proceedings as we know them. While some may have mocked early examples of interviews and meetings in the metaverse for their clunky and cartoonish visuals, tech giants like Meta and Microsoft are racing to build more sophisticated virtual reality platforms.
